Driving Suggestion

There are several important rules which should be noted by drivers if you choose to drive yourself. The main roads are usually occupied by motor cycle riders and cars drivers who are sometimes aggressive. Asian countries have the stir on the right hand side differs from the western countries. While on the road, the cars side is on the right while the motor cycles are on the left. If you choose to drive slowly, you may then drive on the left side to avoid road traffic and people may not honk you.

There is also a unique way in honking which may be surprising for foreigners and may not acceptable in western culture. Indonesians like to honk. That might be important information. They honk when they pass their friends or relatives on the road. They honk in every junction to signal other drivers or riders that they will pass. Mean while Balinese will always honk three times if they pass the T-junctions, bridges, temples or spooky areas that they belief are dwelled by spirits. In additions, you may find people honk you over and over again if they impatient. That’s the sign for you to get before you and they are in a rush.

In the city such as Denpasar, Kuta and Jimbaran areas, the traffic usually takes place in many places caused by many reasons. There are sometimes Hindu ceremonial event of cremation or others. A suggestion for you is just be patient. This can take an hour when you are behind the procession. The people usually take the whole road to carry the ceremony and the drivers or riders should be patient when the road ends up crawling for half an hour. You will share the roads with the bicycle riders, vendors and the people walking. Always stay alert and be careful on the roads.
